A Patriot’s Perspective
Here’s an interesting tidbit: many Singaporeans miss the countries they’ve visited and connected on a spiritual level when they return to Singapore. In fact, I have friends who went to India and Thailand and they always say how they miss the people, the hospitality, the atmosphere over there. Basically, those are real countries.
What you see here in Singapore is, sadly, just a facade. An empire of a tyrannical family who induces fear into the people and enforces strict measures to govern. Singaporeans have one of the highest count of depression in the world. And I found that to be true when I was in the Singapore Civil Defence Force while undergoing my National Service and on average, there would be at least 5 calls for attempted suicide. The government, the ominous pressure and the entire environment here is driving Singaporeans mad and towards their limits. Yet, the only reason they dare not oppose the government or get out of their so-called comfort zone is because for the past 42 years, we have grown from a Third World country that was guaranteed to fail to a First World economy. The rich here will never give that away and so they back the government in every way. The middle-class and the suffering here are left to deal with their problems, getting those fake charities to help them in the minimal of ways.
Many people say Singapore is a utopia. Well, a utopia by definition is that every facet of the people is living well with no corruption and no oppression. Singapore is the exact opposite of that. That is why you can still hear people complaining. Those complaints, of course, sound weak from the everyman who wishes to just have more money, better living conditions, etc. But this desire to speak out comes from a deeper place in every Singaporean’s heart, especially a Malay Singaporean who knows that this country originally belongs to them. But the sins of our fathers led to this land being taken by the British and then later, taken forcefully from our hands by the present government. And now, the Malays are nothing but a second rate race in Singapore known for its drug problems, teenage pregnancy, highest number of divorces, teenage delinquencies, school dropouts, etc. What is more saddening is that most Malays don’t even feel the need to take back what is rightfully theirs and they would rather be content with the entertainment provided for them to distract them from their real concerns.
Every time I see the war in Iraq, I envy those people because at least they are willing to fight for their right to live, right to freedom. But we don’t even care for the one of the most basic fundamentals of humanity. We care more about our jobs, money, what movies we’re going to watch, which cars to buy, what the latest trend is, and just do whatever the government tells us to do and everything will be alright…
It’s a soulless country, that’s what Singapore’s become. There’s no real happiness here no matter what people say. Because deep in everyone’s hearts, people know that happiness is nothing without freedom.
