Hard Times
4 months since my last income. It’s always been hard as a freelancer. But this year, it’s becoming a real challenge. This year, the media industry (specifically, the Malay side) is going through some sort of major limbo. It almost seems that commissions are being frozen. Production companies have standing projects that are yet to be approved or have been approved, but they lack funds to proceed with production. This, in turn, affects freelancers like me. But I guess it’s a matter of perseverence and fortitude. I met up with an old friend recently and he just got a job as a teacher’s aide. It’s basically a government job with the MOE and has a 3-year compulsory commitment. He described to me what he was going to get. The perks sound tempting. Especially since I’m behind my finances and still have to fund my own comic book series. Parents, especially my mother, are starting to treat me like some freeloader. Of course, compared to my doctor brother and my programming manager sister, both of which possess degrees, unlike me. This year truly has what it takes to break a person’s spirit. But I’m trying hard not to let it happen to me. Like Batman always say, “I never give up.”
